Portuguese citizenship for children of Portuguese parents

Example 1. I am a Portuguese citizen. My child was born in the USA and has American citizenship. My child is under 18 years of age. I want my child to become Portuguese. What do I need to do?

(Both parents need to visit the consulate)

Documents you need to present at the Consulate:

  • Certified copy of your child’s Birth Certificate
  • Copy of your child’s US Passport or another valid picture ID document. (Not necessary for children under 10 years of age);
  • Copy of Birth Certificate of both parents
    • If one or both parents are Portuguese, birth certificates for both, OR valid Portuguese ID document.
    • If one parent is US born, birth certificate, long form
  • Certified copy of your marriage certificate, if applicable, or indication that marriage has been recorded in Portugal (If marriage took place in the USA, you need to hand in a Certified copy of Marriage Certificate so that the marriage can be recorded – separate cost will apply);
  • Fee: free of charge
     

Example 2. I am an American citizen. I am older than 18 and one of my parents (or both) has Portuguese citizenship. I wish to obtain Portuguese citizenship. What do I need to do?

Documents you need to present at the Consulate:

  • Certified copy of your US Birth Certificate, (issued by Vital Statistics of Massachusetts or the State where you were born.—can be obtained online or at the City Clerk’s office. This Birth Certificate should show the signature of your mother/father at the time of your birth, therefore, this certificate should be a certified copy of the Book of Births);
  • Copy of your US Passport or another valid picture ID document;
  • Copy of Birth Certificate of both parents
    • If one or both parents are Portuguese, birth certificates for both, OR valid Portuguese ID document.
    • If one parent is US born, birth certificate, long form
  • Certified copy of parents’ marriage certificate, if applicable, or indication that marriage has been recorded in Portugal (If marriage took place in the USA, you need to hand in a Certified copy of your parents’ Marriage Certificate so that the marriage can be recorded – separate cost will apply);
  • In this case the birth registration in the Portuguese system will NOT be free of charge.
     

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

  • When you apply for Portuguese citizenship for your minor child, (under 18 years of age), your child does not need to be present at the Consulate.
  • When you apply for Portuguese citizenship for your minor child (under 14 years of age) it is not necessary to present the child’s ID document. A valid picture ID document is only necessary when your child is 14 or older.
  • If you apply for Portuguese citizenship and you are an adult (over 18 years of age) it is not necessary for your parents to be present at the Consulate.
  • Visit the Consulate when you have gathered all documents. The Consulate does not accept incomplete dossiers.
  • Acquiring Portuguese citizenship is a lengthy process which can take up to several months. The Consulate will notify you when citizenship is granted.
