What is it and what is the purpose?

Portuguese citizens who reside outside Portugal should register at the Consulate of Portugal. Registration is necessary for obtaining any type of document and it can be particularly useful if you are in an emergency situation.

Registration is a consular act, free of charge, through which your identification is recorded in the consular archives of the Consulate with jurisdiction over your area of residence.

You can only register if you possess a valid Portuguese identification document.

Minors under 10 years of age who need to be registered are not required to be present, but their legal representative needs to apply in person.

Consular registration can only happen if you have Portuguese citizenship.
